Career guidance for the specialists of tomorrow:
Students explore the apprenticeship opportunities available in technical fields

Frankenthal, October 16, 2015 – Within the scope of the "apprenticeship tour," on September 18th RKW Michelstadt opened its doors to students who have nearly completed their studies. Under the slogan "Discover your possibilities," about 200 students participated in the event and used the opportunity to get first-hand information on apprenticeship opportunities. The Site RKW Michelstadt introduced the technical vocational fields of process mechanic for plastics and rubber technology, textiles production mechanic, machine and system operator, industrial mechanic, as well as electronics engineer for operational systems.

"What will I do once school ends?" is probably the most important question students ask as they get closer to receiving their diplomas. In order to offer some orientation in this regard, the Business Service organization in the Odenwald district (1) – in cooperation with the Industrial Association of the Odenwald district and the Employment Agency – initiated the "apprenticeship tour."

The first "apprenticeship tour" held on September 18, 2015 was a pilot project conducted within the scope of an EU funding program (2). The event, which in the future will be held on an annual basis, is focused on students in the 8th and 9th grades at secondary schools or enrolled in college preparatory programs at schools located in the Odenwald district. It enables students as well as teachers and parents to speak directly to apprentices and companies offering apprenticeships in order to ask questions regarding the relevant apprenticeship programs. The prospective students can gather information on site and, in this manner, learn more about the companies and the offered vocational programs, application deadlines, duration of apprenticeships, and requirements.

On September 18th, RKW – along with many other prestigious companies from the Odenwald district, e.g., Bosch Rexroth AG or LY Holding GmbH – opened its doors to students.

The students' interest is just as widely diversified as RKW's offer – both the production and process engineers as well as the industrial mechanics and electronics engineers were besieged by inquisitive students. It was also a big day for RKW trainees, who presented their work using demonstration objects and answered questions pertaining to their training, their activities, or just normal everyday topics.

Among other objects on display were a blown film extruder in real-time operation as well as a raschel machine, which is used for the manufacturing of round bale nets; in addition, the electronics engineers and industrial mechanics set up a switch cabinet and described their test pieces.

"A rousing success: About 10% of the students that visited us have already submitted applications for an internship or apprenticeship," says Sandra Grimm, HR Manager at RKW Michelstadt. "We are especially happy to see that a large number of applicants – about 50% – are female."

The "apprenticeship tour" provides RKW with the ideal platform to secure the specialists of tomorrow. A training at RKW offers a wide range of opportunities and opens an exciting and promising future – both regionally as well as internationally.

The Site RKW Michelstadt, which was founded as a cloth factory in 1828, has been a part of the RKW Group since 2002. With around 190 employees – currently including 8 trainees – the site focuses on the development, research, and production of high-quality agricultural films and round bale netting.
