60 Years of RKW

The Frankenthal-Based Plastic Films Manufacturer Celebrates Its Anniversary

What do stable cement sacks and thin, lightweight baby diapers have in common? The high-performance plastics used in both products are based on 60 years of innovation at RKW. From the outset, the company seized on one of the most important industrial trends of the 1950s and 1960s. Today the RKW Group produces outstanding film solutions and nonwovens for the global market - in-line with its corporate claim "When excellence matters."

Shortly after the end of the Second World War, company founder Jakob Müller, who had actually specialized in leather, began searching for a substitute. Quickly recognizing the benefits of plastics, in 1946 he founded the "Renolit-Werke" in Worms for the production of plastic products made of PVC. So as to intensify the focus on the manufacture and further development of polyethylene films, and to offer customers the best possible products, the "Rheinische Kunststoffwerke GmbH" in Worms was founded in 1957.

In 1960-61, for the first time the company processed over 100 tonnes of plastics a day, today, it is about 380,000 tonnes per year at 20 locations worldwide, including Sites in Egypt, China, Vietnam and the USA.

RKW's corporate claim - "When excellence matters" - reflects what has been the basis of its success throughout the past 60 years: premium-quality plastic films for a range of market segments, which have allowed the family-owned company to become one of the world's leading providers of film solutions.

Innovative products

A revolution on the market was, e.g., the self-venting plastic sack RKW ProVent®. RKW was the first company with such a solution, offering especially the chemical and building materials industries an alternative to paper sacks that reliably protects powdery, moisture-sensitive goods from the effects of weather and extends product shelf life.

A further innovation: the filled polyolefin film (FPO®). The sustainable films are made of more than 50% natural minerals. With its paper-like look and feel, while being grease as well as waterproof, FPO® is being used as environmentally friendly packaging material for the food industry or as label films.

When it comes to hygiene applications like baby diapers or feminine hygiene products, and to the medical sector, RKW is one of the global market leaders. With a product scope of breathable and non-breathable textile backsheets that offer excellent printing quality RKW supplies the numerous well-known companies of the industry.

With sustainable film solutions, we enable our customers to improve the daily life of consumers all over the world. This is RKW's business mission, and accordingly, RKW continuously develops films that are sustainable while providing excellent performance. RKW's shrink films for the beverage industry with outstanding performance and printability are one example. For transport and pallet applications, RKW's films protect goods during transport and ensure they safely endure during long distance transportation.

In addition, RKW is leading the way when it comes to agricultural products - for example, with Polydress® O2 Barrier 2in1, the world's first combination of silage and vacuum film. Compared to standard films, this product offers a six to ten times better oxygen-barrier protection, not to mention enormously improved efficiency.

These and other innovations have helped RKW steadily expand its position in the respective markets, and have made us one of the world's top suppliers today.
